Keep your greenbacks and your eco-spirit by being eco friendly-frugal

March 14, 2009

Trendwatching has inspired us with their latest report, reminding us that we can be good to the environment, health and pocketbook.

Turn out the lights, power down your computer, wear a sweater. If you’re eco-trendy invest in an electricity meter reader. Van GO Green blogged about one from Black and Decker recently. The less you spend on your hydro or electrical bill, the more you can save during this economic downturn, or save up for something truly eco-chic.

Compost. Get nutrient rich topsoil (so you don’t have to buy it) and save on garbage bags!

Choose built-to-last solutions like cast iron pans that cost about the same as non-stick pans (less the toxic coating). With the proper care you’ll be amazed how great they cook, how easy it is to clean, and how long it will last. Think about how many dollars you’ll save when you only have to purchase one long lasting pan opposed to several non-stick pans.

Use rechargeable batteries. They last longer, saving you from buying and throwing out disposables all of the time.

Shop thrift, consignment, and garage sales. Find out if there’s a clothing swap group in your neighbourhood. Someone else’s seconds will be brilliant again in new lighting. Especially when it comes to children’s clothing, sporting gear and toys.

Book and magazine lovers rejoice! Start your own swap club and build friendships while expanding your literary knowledge or join an existing one.

Carpool, take transit or join an auto-network (if one is available in your area). How many cars can your household afford? Better yet, how many cars can your household afford to lose? Get active by walking or biking to the store, school or even work.

Watch you portion sizing. A recent study shows that we load up our plate –consuming and wasting more food. Reducing your portions based on the recommended calorie intake your body needs can ensure leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch, while still feeling satisfied physically
